How to Pick the Right Toothbrush for Your Child?

Posted by Dr. Bishay on Mar 16 2022, 08:01 AM

Childhood is the best time to develop healthy oral habits. When parents instill good oral hygiene habits in children at an early age, there are higher chances of them being a permanent part of their life.

This will not only help them maintain good oral health throughout their lifetime but will also prevent health conditions caused by oral issues.

In this blog, our dental team at Grace Dental in Sugar Land, Texas, explains the factors to be considered when choosing a toothbrush for your child.

  • Toothbrush Size

A toothbrush that covers the entire surface area of a molar tooth is the right-sized brush for a child. The toothbrush you choose should depend on the age of your child and the size of their mouth.

Options include:

  • Infant Toothbrush

These are silicon-made finger slip toothbrushes recommended for kids aged 0 to 3 years. They help remove milk buildup and prevent bacterial growth.

  • Kid-Sized Toothbrush

Kids’ toothbrushes are small, soft-bristled, and easy to manage when brushing. They are suitable for children aged between 3 and 9 years old.

  • Adult Toothbrush

Children who are above 10 years of age can use adult toothbrushes. Electric toothbrushes are also a viable option to get rid of stubborn plaque and stains.

  • Toothbrush Type

Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush that is gentle on the gums and enamel.

  • Toothbrush Handle

The body and handle of the brush should be soft as they also come in contact with the teeth when brushing posterior teeth. Proper grip is attained by larger and slimmer handles.

  • Toothbrush Color

Bright-colored toothbrushes with the child’s favorite superhero characters on them encourage use and combat boredom.

When to Change the Toothbrush?

It’s time to get a new toothbrush for your child if you notice the following:

  • Flared Bristles

When any of the bristles flare out, the toothbrush loses its plaque removal efficacy. Hence, it has to be replaced right away.

  • Inappropriate Size

As your child grows, his/her toothbrush may not be capable of covering the entire surface of a molar. This is when you need to change it.

When Should Your Child Visit the Dentist?

According to the American Dental Association, a child's first dental visit should be scheduled within six months of the eruption of their first tooth or around their first birthday.
